Colon health is not a new concept, but it has been growing in popularity as a wonderful alternative health solution to keeping your body healthy. The colon is your body's waste disposal system. In essence, it's actually a sewer which is designed to capture and remove toxic materials, bacteria, and general "bad" things from your system.
If that system is backed up or slowed down however, then those toxins and bacteria sit around in your body, potentially "leaking" through to other areas, and contaminating you. Colon health enthusiasts believe that the faster you can move that toxic waste out of your body, the less chances you have of leaking the bad stuff back into your system and creating various health problems.
The other problem encountered with colons that aren't in proper health, is the lack of proper nutrition absorption. When your bowels are clogged with waste matter that hasn't been eliminated properly, that waste can cling to the walls of your colon and bowel. This creates a layer of "sticky" material which doesn't allow nutrients and vitamins to pass through the colon wall for use by your body.
A popular way to keep your colon healthier, is to make sure you keep it cleaned out. Some proponents feel you should do a full colon cleanse at least a couple of times each year, or even with the change of each season. Colon cleansing can be done by flushing the colon fully with an irrigation procedure commonly known as an enema. You can also help your colon flush itself out naturally by drinking extra water, or drinking herbal teas which have a natural laxative effect.
Potential colon health problems can manifest in a variety of ways in your body. If for instance, you have internal or external hemorrhoids, this is usually an indication that your colon is backed up with hard, dry waste material. If you do not have at least one good bowel movement each day, this is also an indication you're colon is not in optimal health. In fact, some proponents of colon therapy feel you should have a minimum of two bowel movements every day. One large movement each morning, and another smaller one later in the day. Your bowels should move immediately and easily as soon as you sit down to eliminate. If you have to wait for the movement, chances are your colon is not as healthy as you might think.
Improving the general health of your colon can be done with some fairly simple, easy steps. The first is to drink more water. Hard, dry stools cause constipation and constipation means toxins aren't being moved out of your body effectively. Drinking plenty of water helps relieve this problem fairly easily.
Eating more fiber rich vegetables is another excellent way to improve your colon health. The colon needs the bulk from that fiber to get things moving regularly.
Taking laxatives is another option, but it's not recommended to use over the counter medication style laxatives because these usually have other ingredients in them such as preservatives, coloring and artificial flavoring that might not be good for your body. Instead, try using some herbal teas, or take individual herbs which are known to help improve the health of your colon. Excellent colon health herbs include Chlorophyll, Slippery Elm, and Chickweed.
